Reiki and Sound Healing: When Energy Work Meets Frequency

There is a moment in a combined Reiki and sound healing session when something shifts — not dramatically, not with fanfare, but quietly and unmistakably. The body softens. The breath deepens. The mind, which has been running its usual commentary, simply stops.

This is the moment I have come to recognise as the threshold. The point where the work begins.

Two Practices, One Language

Reiki and sound healing come from different traditions, but they speak the same fundamental language: the language of energy, vibration, and intention.

Reiki — a Japanese practice developed by Mikao Usui in the early twentieth century — works with the body's energetic field. The practitioner channels universal life force energy (rei = universal, ki = life energy) through their hands, supporting the body's natural capacity to heal, rebalance, and restore itself. It is subtle, non-invasive, and deeply intelligent in the way it moves to where it is needed.

Sound healing works through a different but complementary mechanism. When instruments such as crystal singing bowls, Tibetan bowls, gongs, or tuning forks are played, they produce frequencies that travel through the air and directly through the body. Water — which makes up approximately 70% of the human body — is an exceptional conductor of sound. Every cell, every organ, every system receives the vibration.

When these two practices are brought together, the effect is not simply additive. It is multiplicative.

What Happens in the Body

The physiological effects of combined Reiki and sound healing are an area of growing interest, though practitioners have observed them for decades. Scientific evidence remains limited and individual experiences vary.

The nervous system may shift toward greater calm. The constant activation of the sympathetic nervous system — the fight-or-flight response that many of us live in as a baseline — can begin to quiet during a session. Many people report a slowing of the breath and a sense of physical ease. These are subjective experiences; they are not a substitute for medical care.

Brainwave patterns may change. Sound frequencies, particularly those produced by crystal bowls, may support the listener in moving from an active, thinking state toward deeper relaxation. Some people enter a state between waking and sleep. This is the state in which many find it easier to rest and let go.

Resonance and the body. Sound travels through the body as vibration. Many people find this physically perceptible — a sense of the sound moving through them. Sound healing works with this quality of resonance to support a feeling of ease and integration.

Energy and flow. In the Reiki framework, physical and emotional symptoms are understood in relation to the flow of ki through the body. The vibration of sound may support this sense of flow. These are concepts from a specific healing tradition, not claims of clinical efficacy.

What Happens in the Emotional Body

The physical effects can be profound. But for many people, it is the emotional dimension of combined Reiki and sound healing that proves most meaningful.

Emotions that have been held in the body — sometimes for years — can surface and release during a session. This is not a dramatic or destabilising process. It is more like a gentle softening. A sense of something that has been held rigid beginning to ease.

Grief. Anxiety. Old tension. The residue of experiences that were never fully processed. These are not problems to be solved intellectually. Sound and Reiki together create the conditions in which the body may feel safe enough to let them go — though every person's experience is different.

Many people cry during sessions — not from sadness, but from relief. The body recognising, perhaps for the first time in a long time, that it is held. That it is safe. That it can rest.

The Role of Intention

What distinguishes a truly transformative session from a pleasant relaxation experience is intention.

In my practice, every session begins with a conversation — however brief — about what the person is carrying. What they are seeking. What they are ready to release. This intention is not a rigid agenda. It is more like a compass bearing: a direction that the session can orient towards, even as it follows its own organic unfolding.

The Reiki practitioner holds this intention throughout. The sound supports it. And the person receiving the session — even in a state of deep relaxation, even in theta — is participating at a level that goes beyond conscious awareness.

This is why the combination is so powerful. It works on multiple levels simultaneously: the physical, the energetic, the emotional, the subconscious. Nothing is forced. Everything is invited.

Crystal Bowls and the Chakra System

In my sessions, I work primarily with crystal singing bowls — each tuned to a specific note that corresponds to one of the seven main chakras.

  • C — Root chakra (Muladhara): grounding, safety, physical vitality
  • D — Sacral chakra (Svadhisthana): creativity, emotion, flow
  • E — Solar plexus chakra (Manipura): personal power, confidence, clarity
  • F — Heart chakra (Anahata): love, compassion, connection
  • G — Throat chakra (Vishuddha): expression, truth, communication
  • A — Third eye chakra (Ajna): intuition, perception, inner vision
  • B — Crown chakra (Sahasrara): spiritual connection, presence, transcendence

As I move through the body with Reiki, I select bowls intuitively — responding to what I sense in the person's energy field. Sometimes a single bowl will be played for an extended period over one area. Sometimes the session moves fluidly through the full spectrum. The sound and the energy work in dialogue, each informing the other.

What to Expect in a Session

A combined Reiki and sound healing session at ATMA typically lasts between 60 and 90 minutes. The person lies fully clothed on a treatment table, in a warm, dimly lit space. There is no need to do anything, achieve anything, or understand anything. The only invitation is to receive.

The session begins with a few minutes of grounding breathwork — a gentle arrival into the body and the present moment. Then the Reiki begins, with hands placed lightly on or just above the body. The bowls enter gradually, their tones building a sonic landscape that supports the energetic work.

After the session, there is always time for integration — for sitting quietly, drinking water, and allowing the experience to settle. Many people feel deeply rested, as though they have slept for hours. Others feel a quiet clarity, a sense of having set something down that they had been carrying for too long.

The Days After

The effects of a combined session often continue to unfold in the days that follow. Some people notice more vivid dreams. Sleep often improves. There can be a sense of greater ease in the body, a softening of habitual tension patterns.

This is the integration process — the body and nervous system continuing to settle after the session. It is important to be gentle with yourself during this time: to rest when you need to, to drink plenty of water, and to allow whatever arises to move through without resistance.

Who This Practice Is For

Combined Reiki and sound healing is for anyone who is ready to slow down and listen to what the body is holding.

It is particularly supportive for those navigating periods of stress, burnout, grief, or transition. For those who feel disconnected from themselves — from their intuition, their creativity, their sense of purpose. For those who have tried many approaches to wellbeing and found that something essential is still missing.

It is also, simply, for those who are curious. Who sense that there is more to health than the absence of symptoms. Who are drawn to the possibility of a deeper kind of rest.

You do not need to believe in energy work for it to be effective. The body does not require your intellectual agreement. It simply needs the conditions — safety, stillness, sound, presence — in which it can do what it already knows how to do.
